Pray Over Them: Honor Your Parents

This is the next article in the series, Pray Over Them.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:12

One of the 10 Commandments. And something every parent everywhere has probably at one point or another told their children in hopes that they would listen, just this one time. This one may seem a little bit selfish to be praying over your children for their obedience, but it is so much deeper than that!

This commandment is different in that it is the only commandment that comes with a promise attached to it for being obedient. God promises that those who honor their parents would live long and full lives in the land that He gives them. God will provide for His children when they exercise obedience to Him. That includes all areas of our lives, too! While the promise seems a bit general, it is specific enough for us to know that honoring parents (in ALL stages of life) turns into a blessing, both for parents and children.

So, how do we apply this to prayer? We not only pray that our children be obedient, but that we would be God-fearing parents who lead our children towards righteousness. If we can't first be examples of Christ's love, why would we expect them to follow? Pray that they would listen to instruction and follow it well. Pray that they would remember who they belong to as they face trials and tribulations in this world. That they would not only honor their parents in their actions, but even more importantly, Jesus. Pray that through their obedience and honor, that He would make their lives long and fulfilling. How thankful we are that He loves us that much, to bless us!
